... Interestingly the reason why they chose the site for Kew Cottages back in the 19th century is that it was on a hill. The idea was that the so-called fumes from the mentally ill would go up into the sky and not contaminate the populous. That was the thinking. Kew Cottages was positioned where it was on a hill so that the fumes from the disease could not infect those who were not ill. It is quite bizarre when you think about it in this day and age. The Disability Service Safeguards Bill looks at ...

... Ms Pennicuik and I remember well in the inquiry into Kew Cottages and related matters that there was a reference - the very first reference - by this Parliament to the Ombudsman on matters that required investigation by the Ombudsman. There was a recommendation from a parliamentary committee followed by a motion of this chamber. There was no attempt by the government in those days to try and block the legitimate activities of the Ombudsman and the work of the Ombudsman to investigate and dig deep to find out what was going on. But in this case ...

... Many years ago I worked at Kew Cottages . We had computers. We did not have many. This was the early 1990s, and we were still using what were then called Apple Macintoshes. Mr Richardson - Going back to the good old days. Ms WARD - Going back to the good old days - I will have the member for Essendon talking about his cars from the 80s shortly. We had data - reams of data - in piles of paper. There were piles of paper stacked on desks, on chairs ...

... But this is about strengthening the capacity to hold to account organisations and individuals who do not meet the standards that they should, particular in the northern suburbs of Melbourne and places that have history, like Mont Park and others - Kew Cottages as well - places that we have been involved in. There have also been a number of others - like Colanda out towards Colac - that certainly had engagement in one period and have been involved in some policy work about how there is change. What we wanted to make sure of, of course, ...

... If I could digress a little bit - certainly not as much as previous speakers have on this motion - and just go down the road a little to the Kew Residential Services site in the same municipality, the City of Boroondara, that is a saga that has been going on now for more than 10 years. In a nutshell, public land was set aside for the use of intellectually disabled people, and most of it was flogged off to the private sector. Some residents are permanently unable to return to the site. Some residents have ...

...Question asked by: Ms Pennicuik Directed to: Minister for Major Projects Asked on: 9 February 2017 ANSWER: Major Projects Victoria (MPV) obtained legal advice confirming that Kew Development Corporation Pty Ltd (KDC) was entitled to an extension to the Kew Residential Services Development Agreement (DA) to 27 April 2018. The extension was confirmed by letter to KDC on 22 June 2016. The extension to the Project Term was one of several matters referenced in the Sixth Deed of Variation to the DA (Sixth Deed), which was executed on 9 December 2016.
...Ms PENNICUIK (Southern Metropolitan) - My question is for the Minister for Major Projects, and it is in regard to the Kew Residential Services development agreement, about which I asked her a question last year. The minister did respond to me, saying that Major Projects Victoria (MPV) had agreed to an extension with Kew Development Corporation until 27 April 2018, and the letter had been sent to them by MPV on 22 June. However, on the government's contract publishing system website, the sixth deed of variation was not actually signed until 9 December, ...
